Family Owned and Managed

Judd Ranch is owned and managed by Dave and Cindy Judd. Son Nick and his wife Ginger joined the family operation full time in 2003 after graduating Kansas State University. Like Nick, son Brent has also returned full time to the ranch, since graduating from Kansas State and Brent's new bride, Ashley, joined the family in December '07. The family is rounded out with Nick and Ginger's two young children Lily and Levi.

Because this family ranching enterprise depends strictly on income generated from bull, female and embryo sales, producing high-quality, functional, practical, multi-dimensional Gelbvieh, Balancer and Red Angus females and bulls that meet customer demand is the No. 1 priority. Change is accepted and embraced and new technologies are adopted while keeping the emphasis on grassroots needs and multi-trait selection.

Judd Ranch consists of 450-plus purebred Gelbvieh mother cows, 20 Red Angus cows, approximately 150 Gelbvieh and Red Angus replacement heifers, and 100-some Red Angus/Gelbvieh recipients. Gelbvieh have been a part of the cowherd for more than 25 plus years, with Balancer and Red Angus purebreds added in 2000.

A disciplined, principled approach is taken with the spring calving herd and the fall calving herd, along with the ranch’s extensive embryo transfer program. AI is the norm, with our “clean-up bulls” being nationally recognized, highly sought-after AI sires.

Why Gelbvieh?
Dave and Cindy Judd entered the Gelbvieh business when they entered the ranching business upon Dave’s graduation from college. Gelbvieh is part of the Judd Ranch program for four key reasons:
1) Information published by the USDA Meat Research Center (MARC) in Clay Center, Neb., shows Gelbvieh produces more pounds of weaned calf per cow exposed than any other widely used breed.
2) MARC data also indicates that Gelbvieh is the only widely used breed that excels in calving ease, weaning growth, yearling growth, milk yield and retail yield combined.
3) Gelbvieh is the one breed that combines exceptional maternal ability with the added muscle and performance that commercial producers demand.
4) Gelbvieh is the crossbreeding continental breed of choice, excelling in profitability. Cattlemen participating at the Composite Cattle Breeders annual meeting in 2000 gave Gelbvieh the nod for growth, muscle and maternal power.

Welcome to Judd Ranch!

The home of Functional, Convenience-Oriented, Multi-Dimensional Gelbvieh, Balancer
and Red Angus Females and Bulls.

Why Red Angus?
Judd Ranch added Red Angus in response to customers who requested the opportunity to purchase a second breed at Judd Ranch to complement their Judd Ranch-sired Gelbvieh-influenced females. The breed selection was narrowed to Red Angus for two main reasons:
1) Red Angus’ superiority for calving ease, moderate mature size, marbling and the convenience traits.
2) Red Angus crosses beautifully on Gelbvieh females, giving you that all profitable heterosis and marketability.

Ranch Location
Judd Ranch is located on Highway 68, 1 mile west of the small rural town of Pomona, Kan., or 12 miles west of Ottawa, Kan. From the Kansas City (MCI) Airport, Judd Ranch is just a 90-minute drive southwest.

Judd Ranch has its annual bull sale the first Saturday in March and its annual female sale the second Sunday in October. Embryos are for sale by private treaty from some of the beef industry’s most honored donors.
